Full Course Design

Instructor Priya Jamkhedkar works with an OAI UX designer and instructional designer on replacing textbooks with an adaptive platform in PSU physics classroom.

PHYSICS: GENERAL PHYSICS

ALGEBRA & CALCULA-BASED (PH 201, 202, 203; PH 211, 212, 213)

PRIYA JAMKHEDKAR, RALF WIDENHORN

Faculty began development in the Algebra-based Physics series by integrating an OpenStax textbook into the Cogbooks adaptive platform along with lecture material and open videos. Additionally, they embedded simulations and interactive graphing problems into the platform. The objective has been to flip the classroom by assigning students work in Cogbooks prior to each class session, then to devoting class time to active learning.

Faculty then leveraged the work completed in Algebra-based Physics for development of an A+A Calculus-based series. Both series of A+A General Physics are scheduled to scale to all sections in Academic Year 2020 - 21.

STATISTICS: INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

STAT 243

RACHEL WEBB

Faculty member created an open resource textbook for Statistics, which was integrated into the Realizeit adaptive platform. She has deep experience in active learning strategies and leveraged the student performance analytics to inform activities in class. For her design and implementation of A+A in her course, she received the Online Learning Consortium's Digital Innovation award in 2018.

The faculty member continues to iterate and improve upon the course. In Winter & Spring terms 2019, she collaborated with an advisor in a student support pilot to explore timely outreach to students and direct academic coaching.

ERIC SHEAGLEY, JACK BARBERA

Faculty expressed interest in ALEKS, an off-the-shelf adaptive platform, and the plan is to scale the use of ALEKS to all sections of General Chemistry in Academic Year 2019 - 20. To address student affordability, they will incorporate an open resource textbook and align it with ALEKS for Academic Year 2020 - 21.

MATHEMATICS: COLLEGE ALGEBRA (MTH 111)
CALCULUS (MTH 251, 252)

WITH STEVE BOYCE

Instructors of College Algebra have worked with us to determine that a full scale recalibration of course coordination and instructional professional development is needed to scale multiple sections of the course with an adaptive platform. They continue to work with OAI to build a customized design and support structure for their courses.

In addition, calculus faculty in this department are experimenting with a customized version of Knewton in select sections, employing an open resource textbook.
