New Certificate in Urban Design:

The Graduate Certificate in Urban Design at Portland State University, a joint effort of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning and the Department of Architecture, has been created to offer planners, designers, architects, and others the opportunity to engage and incorporate in their own work the principles and methods of urban design. It utilizes the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region as a laboratory, an urban place renowned for its use of urban design and attention to urban design concerns. AICP Student Project Award Contemporary Issue

"Going Public! Strategies for Meeting Public Restroom Need in Portland's Central City"

Congratulations to the group of students from Portland State University who
won the "Contemporary Issue" category of the 2007 AICP Student Project
Awards! This award will be presented at the APA National Planning
Conference in Philadelphia, April 14-18. Those who attended OPI last fall
may recall that this project won the 2006 OAPA Award for Student
Achievement in Planning.

AICP Student Project Award Contemporary Issue
"Going Public! Strategies for Meeting Public Restroom Need in Portland's
Central City"
Portland State University, Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning

"Going Public" reports on the existing condition of Portland Central
City public restroom supply, demand, and need; provides an analysis of
management, funding, and policy alternatives; and recommends options for
meeting need. The project involved interviews with representatives from
over 20 stakeholder groups representing a range of Portland Central City
restroom interests, including neighborhood associations, social service
organizations, city bureaus, land owners, and nonprofit organizations.
Relief Works did case studies to gauge what other cities have done to
address public restroom needs and conducted an assessment of Portland
current public restroom facilities for safety, services provided, ADA
accessibility, building components, and maintenance.

The "Portland Edge" MURP Award

In 2007, the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning will award a $2000 Portland Edge Scholarship to an incoming student in the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning degree program who is a member of an under-represented group. Interested candidates should include a separate letter applying for the Portland Edge Scholarship along with their other application materials, due January 15, 2007.

The award will be made in spring 2007 along with other offers of financial assistance for the 2007-2008 academic year. The scholarship is funded with the royalties from The Portland Edge (Island Press, 2004), an anaysis of Portland area planning authored by faculty and graduates of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning.
