Established in 1966 under a grant from the US Department of Education, the Center focuses on urban policy analysis and urban and regional planning.
The Center also serves as a community services resource for local government. It sponsors conferences and short courses on important urban topics for professionals and members of the public. It also gives opportunities for graduate students to acquire research experience through participation in projects.

This service center was center was created in 1991 to better connect the resources of higher education to the issues and needs of communities in the six-county Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area. In addition, its community-based board, drawn from throughout the region, has worked to develop roles for the Institute as a catalyst, bringing new attention to issues of metropolitan significance and providing a neutral forum for the discussion of issues that transcend jurisdictional or organizational boundaries.
The Institute's programs include an annual forum: Metroscape, a magazine and atlas for the region; the Regional Connections Project, an analysis of the major clusters in the metropolitan economy: and the Community Geography Project, an effort to incorporate cutting-edge information technology in grassroots activities. The Institute maintains a comprehensive Web site from which most project products can be retrieved.

The Center serves as a statewide public service and research group concentrating on population information.
Founded in 1956 as the Oregon State Board of Census, it came under PSU's umbrella and changed to its current name in 1965, It houses the Oregon State Data Center, the lead agency in Oregon collaborating with US Bureau of the Census.
The staff is also active in a variety of research projects, including enrollment forecasts for school districts, market analyses, population distribution, and migration. Center staff regularly assist city, country and state government on population issues.

An equitable
and efficient transportation system for people and goods has a significant
influence on the well-being of every citizen, impacting quality of life
and the economy. Social, environmental and technological trends must
be anticipated and incorporated into a "smart" transportation
system in order to ensure resource preservation and enhancement of the
region's economic productivity. Toward this end, the Center for Transportation
Studies strives to stimulate and conduct multidisciplinary research
on transportation issues, facilitating the dissemination of information

The Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation is a cross-university and cross-disciplinary program aimed at advancing bicycle and pedestrian transportation as mainstays of Oregon's state, regional and local transportation systems.
