The Veterans Advising serves the academic needs of PSU's student-veterans. The Veterans Adviser can assist with pre-admission advising, transfer issues, and to help ensure that course work meets your graduation requirements. The Veterans Adviser can also help student veterans better understand their VA education benefits.

Veteran Certification Office: 104 Neuberger Hall, (503) 725-5523

The Veteran Certification Office will assist student/veterans with the process of applying for VA education benefits. Once registered for classes the Certification Office will notify the VA that you are enrolled and should be able to receive your entitlement. The Certification office can also help veterans with the process of having military coursework evaluated for college level credit.

The Oregon Dept. of Veterans Affairs has established a branch office on the Portland State campus. ODVA@PSU is designed to help veterans and their dependents more easily access additional federal, state and private veterans support services in the Portland area.

Student Health and Counseling: 1880 SW 6th Ave., (503) 725-2800

The Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) provides mental health, medical and dental services. Students are able to work with physicians, dentists, pharmacists, therapists and other health care providers. Many services are free of charge or have minimal fees.

Career Center: 402 University Services Bldg, (503) 725-4613

The Career Center helps students explore career options and develop job search skills such as resume writing, interviewing, etc. The Center also maintains a list of current full and part-time employment opportunities, as well as internships. The Center is also familiar with specific job search resources for veterans

 


Financial Aid

Students who wish to supplement their GI Bill benefits may apply for federal and state financial aid. The first and most important step is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure to include any school in which you may be attending during the following school year. It is recommended you fill out this form as early in the year as possible.

 


Scholarships

NOTE: Most scholarships require the submission of a FAFSA.

There are several scholarships that are specifically targeted to veterans:

  • THE DAVID WEISENBURG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The David Weisenburg Memorial Scholarship is a $1,500 renewable award for a full-time undergraduate Portland State University student who is either in the active military, reserve/national guard, dependents or immediate family of personnel involved in either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. This also includes military involved in Homeland Defense. Applicants must be Oregon residents progressing toward completion of a baccalaureate degree at PSU and have demonstrated financial need.   • AMERICAN (AMVETS) VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP

AMVETS annually awards scholarships to the sons, daughters or grandchildren of AMVETS who would have been eligible for AMVETS membership. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Click here for additional infomormation and application.

 


Oregon Veterans Dependent Tuition Waiver

The State of Oregon offers a tuition waiver for the dependents of veterans who died or became 100% disabled after September 11, 2001. The waiver may cover the cost of tuition at OUS institutions for both Bachelors and Masters degrees. For eligibility information and applications visit the Oregon University System Website.

 


Veterans' Organizations

 

There are several veterans organizations that can help with the process of filling out benefit paperwork or to be an advocate in any and all veterans' affairs.

 

The American Legion: The American Legion was intrumental in the creation of the Veterans' Administration. It is universally recognized as the originator of the GI Bill of Rights and is contantly working to maintain the rights and benefits earned by veterans.

 

American Veterans (AMVETS): The purpose of AMVETS is to keep the public reminded that the veterans of World War I, II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, and those serving in the Armed Forces thereafter, have fought and served to preserve peace, liberty, and democracy. Contact 1-800-7AMVETS.

 

Disabled American Veterans: The Disabled American Veterans is an organization that acts as a liaison between the veteran and the Department of Veterans' Affairs. They represent veterans in situations where they have filed claims with the DVA. Contact 503-412-4750 for more information.

 

Military Order of the Purple Heart: This is an exclusive organization comprised of combat wounded veterans. Thy act as a liaison between the veteran and the DVA.

 

Paralyzed Veterans of America: This is a non-profit organization that provides no cost assistance to veterans who wish to bring claim against the DVA. They are accredited representatives who are experts on DVA law and administer advise to veterans in need. Contact 503-412-4762 for more information.

 

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW): The membership of the VFW is made up of men and women who have served honorably in overseas engagements for which a campaign badge or medal has be authorized by the US Government.

 
 

Portland State Unversity Student Veteran Association

 

The Student Veteran Association is a student organization that is made up of veterans who are PSU students. They help student veterans become familiar with Portland State, provide community engagement, and raise awareness of veterans issues. For more information, contact operation_vf@yahoo.com.

The Portland VA Medical Center provides medical, surgical, and psychiatric care to veterans in twenty-one Oregon counties and five Washington counties. A VA Outpatient Clinic, is located in near downtown Vancouver, WA. An Outpatient Clinic is also located on the VAMC Portland Campus.
