Transferring Courses

How Will My Courses Be Accepted by PSU?

The most frequent question that transfer students have is how courses will transfer to PSU. The u.select website lists PSU equivalents for courses from most institutions throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Instructions on how to use the system are here. If you only want to see how specific courses will transfer from these schools, you need not create an account; choose "Guest Login" and click the "Equivalencies by school" link.

In general, courses taken at a regionally accredited institution that are college-level (i.e., not developmental) will transfer. Some limitations do apply, including:

  • maximum 12 credits of vocational/technical coursework
  • maximum 124 credits from a community/junior college
  • maximum 24 credits of English as a Second Language.

If PSU offers a similar course at the same level, the course will usually transfer as a direct equivalency (i.e., with a specific course number). If PSU does not offer a similar course, or offers it at a different level, the course may transfer as either elective credit from a specific department (LD for lower division; UD for upper division) or as general elective credit.

Portland State University operates on a quarter system.  Credits transferred from a college on semesters are multiplied by 1.5 to equate to quarter credits (i.e., a 3 credit semester course is worth 4.5 quarter credits).

As part of the admission process, you will need to submit an official transcript from each college you have attended. Upon admission, you receive a transfer evaluation report listing how your transfer courses were accepted and how they apply towards PSU's graduation requirements. If you take courses at another college after you are admitted to PSU, you also must submit an official transcript from that college to have those credits added to your transfer evaluation.

If you are a CO-ADMITTED student using the financial aid benefit of co-admission, please note: If PSU is your home school for financial aid, your classes at your community college

  • must be at the 100-level or above (with the exception of MTH 70 or MTH 95)
  • cannot exceed the 12 credit maximum of vocational/technical credits
  • cannot exceed the 124 credit maximum from a community or junior college
