IST 299 Roads Seminar: Fall Term, Mon 4-4:50 (CRN 15144)

Program Description:  Roads to Success is a Portland State University early start program for new freshmen. First offered in 2009, Roads provides sixty students the opportunity to learn valuable skills and be exposed to campus resources prior to their first term at PSU.

Roads students are exposed to critical academic skills; student success and college adjustment strategies, co-curricular opportunities, resource referrals and community building activities to assist in the transition from high school to the University prior to the start of fall term. Intended outcomes include increased academic success, retention and overall student satisfaction.

Components: The primary component of Roads is a three-credit course offered the two weeks prior to the start of fall term (including Viking Days) followed by an additional one-credit seminar during fall term which meets on Mondays.  Approximately two-thirds of the cohort will live in the First-Year Experience Residence Hall when the program begins on September 10th if they make arrangements to do so prior to the mid-June, 2012 deadline.

Curriculum: The program uses Skip Downing's "On Course" curriculum and highlights the eight principles and essential qualities that successful students have including:  accepting personal responsibility, discovering self-motivation, mastering self-management, employing interdependence, gaining self-awareness, adopting life-long learning, increasing self confidence and developing emotional intelligence. Additionally, attention is given to college adjustment issues, academic "culture", practicing tolerance, understanding diversity, academic skill building, college writing, major and career exploration, community building, exposure to campus resources and co-curricular opportunities.

Required Textbook: There is a required textbook for Roads.  In 2011, we collaborated with Cengage Learning to create a custom PSU textbook in an effort to decrease cost to students and include relevant PSU information.  The result is On Course: College Success at PSU by Downing/Ellis (2011).  The text is available at the PSU Bookstore.

Excerpt from The Oregonian article originally printed on September 27, 2010.

One recent morning in one of the classes taught by Liane O'Banion, students discussed motivation and goals. They wrote letters to themselves describing what they expected to be achieving in six months, when O'Banion will mail the letters to them

Students said the class would help them face their first college classes this week with more confidence and friends.

"I feel a lot more comfortable," said Leila Amirhekmat, 18, of Dana Point, Calif., who will be exploring business as a possible major. "This class gives you all the tools on how to be successful and how to do your best in college."

Elise Realivasquez, 18, of Tujunga, Calif., said O'Banion's class has helped her make friends and adjust to her new home.
