PSU-UASD Partnership

The Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS) at Portland State University has forged a partnership with the major public university in the Dominican Republic, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), to promote mutual academic activities and a shared vision for a sustainable future.

In July 2011, ISS Director Robert Costanza visited Santo Domingo to sign the official Memorandum of Understanding with the University. The agreement will result in increased cooperation, idea-sharing, and visits by students and faculty between PSU and UASD.

“We are extremely excited to begin this collaboration,” Costanza said. “By sharing knowledge, energy and talent, both universities will move toward the goal of creating a sustainable future.”

As a first step toward collaboration, ISS is welcoming Carol Franco, an ecological economist and native of the Dominican Republic, to the staff as an assistant research professor.  She will play a key role in facilitating cooperation between PSU and the Dominican university system.

The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo was originally established in thee 1500s as Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, the first university in the Americas. The university shares PSU's vision to let knowledge serve the greater society, while facilitating scientific, cultural and artistic interchange with peer institutions around the world.
