Opportunities

ISS seeks to catalyze and communicate sustainable innovation in and around campus. Hence, we are providing opportunities for faculty, students and staff to receive support for innovative sustainability research, teaching, partnerships, and outreach at PSU.

Our goal with the opportunities listed below, and the way we disseminate our funding, is to provide catalytic investments that promote integration, cooperation, synthesis, whole-systems thinking and modeling, and ultimately the creation of real, sustainable solutions to humanity's increasingly interlinked problems. These solutions will reach across disciplinary lines, requiring unprecedented collaboration between academic departments, schools, colleges and communities.

To achieve these goals, the Institute for Sustainable Solutions implements several programs that encourage and support transdisciplinary collaborations to achieve positive outcomes for our community and our world. Because the Miller gift is a challenge grant, we also leverage and attract additional outside support for these initiatives.

Sustainable Solutions Collaboratory

Launching in Summer 2011, this program provides funding to support working groups to collaborate on projects that result in specific outcomes such as synthesis papers, models, grant proposals, courses and/or workshops. This is an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to work with colleagues from other disciplines, as well as community partners, on integrated sustainability research.
