Portland Fire & Rescue plans to circle Shattuck Hall with parked fire engines Monday, Oct. 19, for the unveiling of firefighter memorial designs created by adjunct faculty in the University's Architecture Department. A reception is planned from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Shattuck's second floor and the designs will remain on public display in that location through Friday, Oct. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Seven adjunct faculty are competing to design a new David Campbell Memorial to be built at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge as a tribute to Portland firefighters' bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty. The memorial is named for Chief David Campbell, who died while fighting a fire in 1911.
Portland Fire & Rescue contacted architecture professor Jeff Schnable this past summer with the idea of an architecture design competition for its proposed new memorial. Schnable, who was once adjunct faculty in the Architecture Department, thought it would be appropriate to make it a contest among the talented adjunct faculty: practicing architects who teach one or two design studio courses a term.
Everyone is invited to vote for his or her favorite design. A committee of qualified experts will take these votes into consideration for the final design selection, which is expected the end of November.
