Using Facebook in Student Affairs
The following presentation was given on November 12, 2009 to Student Affairs professionals as well as students. The main take-aways from the presentation were as follows:
- Portland State's online community is "siloed"
- Groups pages, fan pages, and people pages need better connectivity
- Information sharing can reach its potential when we are linked together as one campus community
- Departments should build their bases (friends, fans, or group members) by searching for students who already belong to other groups
- For example, searching for "Portland State Class of 2013" will reveal a group of several hundred students
- Departments should also solicit students to signup on their Facebook pages during Orientation fairs in the summer months
- Facebook is a powerful tool to communicate and engage students
- In 10 days, roughly 230 students joined the following page: http://tinyurl.com/ykw7slv
