Multicultural Educational Learning Modules

The following educational modules were developed by Dr. Shelly Chabon (PSU), Dr. Rik Lemoncello (PSU), Dr. Noma Anderson (University of Tennessee) and Dr. Dorian Lee-Wilkerson (Hampton University) as a project funded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) grant program on multicultural activities, funded in 2011. These learning modules are designed to integrate multicultural knowledge and competencies into core coursework for speech and hearing science courses, at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Modules that correspond with disorder/content areas:

• Module 1 - Speech Sound development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 2 - Language, Cognitive, and Social development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 3 - Literacy development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 4 - Fluency development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 5 - Voice and Resonance development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 6 - Feeding and Swallowing development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 7 - Communication Modalities: development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan
• Module 8 - Hearing development, differences, and disorders across the lifespan

Modules that target core multicultural compentencies (to be used in any course):

• Module B: Cultural Sensitivity
• Module C: Cultural Knowledge / Cultural Competency 
• Module D: Cultural and Linguistic Barriers
• Module E: Cultural Responsiveness & Ethical Resonsibilities
