Background
Dr. Lemoncello joined the fabulous SPHR faculty at Portland State in 2008. He worked as a speech-language pathologist at a large inpatient rehabilitation hospital near Boston, MA prior to completing his doctoral training. He became interested in cognitive rehabilitation during that time as he struggled to teach new information and skills to a variety of clients with acquired speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive challenges. This led him to pursue the doctoral degree with Dr. McKay Moore Sohlberg in the area of cognitive rehabilitation.
His interdisciplinary research focuses on: development and evaluation of assistive technologies for cognition; best-practice methods for teaching new information and skills to clients with cognitive impairments; development and dissemination of evidence-based practice recommendations; and graduate student training. He has established an assistive technology research laboratory at PSU and occasionally supervises in the PSU Speech-Language Clinic. He frequently collaborates with colleagues at the University of Oregon and though Personal Technologies, LLC for funded projects in assistive technology for cognition. He served as Principal Investigator on a two-year federally funded (NIDRR) grant from 2008-2010 to develop and evaluate a Television Assisted Prompting (TAP) reminder system for adults with acquired brain injury.
In addition to his work at PSU, Dr. Lemoncello serves on the Traumatic Brain Injury writing committee for practice recommendations of the Academy of Neurogenic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS). He also serves on the Board and is Secretary for the Brain Injury Support Community (BISC), a Portland metro non-profit organization whose mission is to link people with brain injury to community resources. In addition, he frequently collaborates with Kampfe Management Services (KMS), a Portland-based residential facility for adults with acquired brain injury.
Outside of work, Dr. Lemoncello enjoys baking; he has constructed eight different wedding cakes for friends' weddings, and enjoys providing baked goods for department events. His two black cats also bring infinite joy!
