SPHR 371 - Anatomy and Physiology for Speech & Swallowing

This is an undergradaute/post-baccalaureate pre-requisite course for Speech & Hearing Students that covers the anatomical structures and physiological functions of the respiratory, phonatory, articulation, and resonance systems important for speech production and swallowing function. The course emphasizes clinical applications to the field of Speech-Language Pathology, but should be of interest to students from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of interests, including linguistics, psychology, education, and communication.

Course Description:

This course provides learners with an introduction to anatomy & physiology concepts, with specialized instruction on the structures and functions related to speech and swallowing. This course is a pre-requisite for graduate studies in Speech and Hearing Sciences; thus, special emphasis will be placed on exploring clinical implications of structural and functional impairments.

This course is currently taught as a HYBRID, blended learning class. This means that we meet face-to-face in the classroom only once per week. The remainder of the instruction takes place online. Much of the online content takes the form of online tutorial videos, including videos created by the instructor as narrated PowerPoint slide shows, as well as a variety of useful online videos or other Web sites that capture and explain critical aspects of anatomy and physiology for speech and swallowing. The online learning management system at PSU is Desire to Learn (D2L). All online content for the hybrid course will take place through the course D2L site.

Students currently enrolled in the class will be able to access the online content through D2L, but others may also be interested in this content. Below are links to a list of videos to be viewed as part of the course. Each link will open a new PDF document; clicking on the embedded links will bring you to the videos:
