The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Coalition convened in 2006 to improve access to healthy affordable food and physical activity in the Portsmouth neighborhood of north Portland. The coalition includes the Multnomah County Health Departments Community Wellness and Prevention Program, Portland State University, Kaiser Permanente, Portland Public Schools, and a team of parent leaders from the Cesar Chavez K-8 School and James John Elementary. With funding from the Northwest Health Foundation, the coalition conducts Community Based Participatory Research in order to identify opportunities and barriers for healthy community development. Members of the coalition will present an overview of their work to improve food access for Latino families, including the ongoing Healthy Latino Corner Store Initiative.
Co-Sponsored by PSU's Department of Sociology, Chicano-Latino Studies,
Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies, School of Community Health and School of Social Work.
