The newly revived Nu Pi campus chapter recently brought students and faculty together to discuss "Surviving Political Science." The chapter, part of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, is back under adviser Bruce Gilley, assistant professor of political science.
At the Oct. 8 event, professors, graduate students, and undergraduate chapter leaders shared stories, experiences, and advice. Following the talk, Nu Pi held an initiation ceremony, swearing in four new members of Pi Sigma Alpha.
The chapter, first established in 1982, went dormant in 2005 as a result of shifting faculty advisers and a gap in student leadership. The revival of Nu Pi reflects surging interest in political science at PSU. Enrollment in the undergraduate major has more than doubled in the past five years.
With a newly selected executive board and more than 20 interested students, the chapter is planning a packed year of events. Beginning this month, a new brown bag forum will feature faculty speakers and notable people from the community who have careers in political science. A service project is planned with Portland Parks, and Nu Pi will host a conference in May focused on the ethical and social ramifications of the use of technology in the political arena.
