Advising
Advising is as an ongoing process that assists majors in defining their career goals and planning their program of study. To benefit most from the advising program, majors should make use of the full range of advising services and select a faculty advisor who most closely matches the student's interests or career goals.

The Psychology Department advising process includes four components:
- Freshman Group Advising
Group advising sessions orient students to other advising options within the psychology department, answer questions about University and major requirements, and help Freshmen plan for their sophomore year and other long-term educational goals. You can sign up for an advising session on the sign up sheets posted in the Psychology Department lobby. Please bring a copy of your current Psychology DARS to the session; instructions on how to run a Psychology DARS are posted in the lobby, and available on the psychology department's website. These sessions satisfy the mandatory advising requirements for Freshmen as of Fall 2010. Group advisers can be reached at psyadvis@pdx.edu.
- One on One Advising
Individual advising appointments can be scheduled with department and graduate advisers. In addition to providing information about faculty advising, other, University and major requirements, and individualized DARS readings, one-on-one meetings can answer in-depth questions that are unable to be addressed in Group Advising sessions.
One-on-One appointment times are posted in the Psychology Department lobby (room 317, Cramer Hall). You can check available appointment times and sign yourself up for a session there. Appointments cannot be scheduled over email.

- Faculty Advising
Advising is available from full time faculty members in the Psychology Department. These sessions are intended to help students prepare for long-term educational or career goals. Students should begin to take steps to meet with facutly advisers beginning in their Sophomore year. The first step to finding a facutly adviser is attending a one-on-one advising session. Faculty advisers are only available to students who have attended a one-on-one advising session with a department or graduate adviser. See the above section for information on scheduling a one-on-one advising session.
- Peer Advising
Peer advisers are selected based on their advanced experience as psychology majors. These advisers offer personalized review of the student's DARS, as well as guidance in course planning and referrals to campus resources. Peer advising is available on a drop-in basis in the Peer Advising/Psi-Chi Office located in CH 360. Prior to attending drop-in sessions with peer advisers, students must attend a group advising session or a one-on-one advising session in the Psychology Department. Students should bring a copy of their DARS to the session.
- Mailing list
The Psychology Department administers a listserv for majors and other interested students. All students with an interest in psychology are encouraged to sign up for the listserv in order to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities (career workshops, for example). To subscribe, submit your request to email majordomo@lists.pdx.edu . In your message type: subscribe psychweb. If you have trouble signing up, please write kindermannt@pdx.edu directly.
