Creating Grade Items
Step 1: If you do not have Categories set up in your Gradebook, see the Setting up your Gradebook tutorial before creating grade items. You cannot create grade items until you set up your categories.
Step 2: Grade Items should be created for each time a student will be assessed. Click "New Item" to create your first grade item. Then, select "Numeric" as the grade item type.

Note: While other grade types like Pass/Fail may be useful, they do not allow points to be added to the Final Grade.
Step 3: Give the grade item a name, and select a category to place it within.
Step 4: Enter the maximum points possible for the item. Click "Save and New".
Step 5: Continue to create new items until each item that will be assessed in your course has been created.
Step 6: Click "Grades List" to return to your grade book. Now you can verify that all of your assessment types have been created as categories and each time a student will be assessed there is a grade item
