Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Puget Sound and a Masters degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
 
Currently Mr. Johnson serves as a Professor of Music at Portland State University, conductor of the Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra, and the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble.
 
Prior to these positions Mr. Johnson was a member of the Oregon symphony Orchestra and served as Principal Horn of the Philharmonia Hungarica in Germany. He has also been a regular member of the Seattle Operas' summer productions of the Wagner "Ring Cycle" since 1976. Other orchestras he has performed with include the Seattle Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Charlotte Symphony, the Portland Opera, the Oregon Ballet, the Eugene Symphony, and the Boise Symphony. Summer festival orchestras include the Cascade Festival of Music, the Sunriver Music Festival, the Oregon Bach Festival, the Ernest Bloch Music festival, and the Oregon Coast Music Festival. Mr. Johnson has also been active as a soloist and as a chamber musician. Chamber groups include the Pioneer Brass, the Ensemble Viento, Quintessence (Woodwind Quintet), the Portland Opera Octet, Portland Brass Quintet, and the Big Horn Brass.
 
Mr. Johnson can be heard on numerous recordings with the Oregon Symphony, the Philharmonia Hungarica, the Pioneer Brass, the Ensemble Viento, the Big Horn Brass, and the Oregon Ballet.
