Dr. Zhang is a Research Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Principal Investigator of riverine and reservoir water quality modeling development, watershed and environmental contamination, and environmental impact assessment projects. He has been working side-by-side with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team for the development of watershed, riparian vegetation, water quality, and multimedia environmental modeling capabilities. He is the primary author of generalized water quality modules that are currently coupled with HEC-RAS, HEC-ResSim, and AdH hydraulic and hydrodynamic models as a companion water quality model. He is a co-developer of the HEC-RAS riparian vegetation module and a contributor of 2D hydrodynamic and water quality CE-QUAL-W2 model. Additionally, he has conducted a wide range of hydraulic and water quality modeling applications for many of the major US river systems. He has taught water quality modeling workshops and short courses and provided review and technical support for USACE, EPA and FEMA. He serves on several committees for ASCE, ASABE, AWRA, WEF, and AIH. He is the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the American Institute of Hydrology.
