Mezzo-soprano Christine Meadows grew up in Portland, Oregon and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Portland State University.  She continued her studies at Indiana University where she completed a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance and was a student of Margaret Harshaw.

 

At the beginning of her professional career, Christine distinguished herself with two seasons at New York City Opera where she appeared in Carmen, The Magic Flute, Mefistofele and The Mikado.  She made her professional debut with Portland Opera as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro(1986) and since returning to Portland to live in 1990 has appeared in more than 20 productions with Portland Opera, singing roles such as Hansel, Nerissa in the North American premiere of Hahn's Le Merchand de Venise, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Stephano in Romeo et Julliette and Cornelia in Giulio Cesare.  She has performed with numerous other American companies such as Greater Miami Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Virginia Opera, Central City Opera, Louisville Opera, Florentine Opera, Tulsa and Anchorage Opera. Described as a "bouncy, lovable Cherubino" in The Marriage of Figaro(Opera News), "a fluid, stylish and accurate" Rosina in The Barber of Seville(Opera News), and "a gracious performer with an elegant voice" in Martucci's  Songs of Remembrance(The Columbian), she is a singer with great range and appeal.

 

As a concert soloist, Ms. Meadows has made frequent appearances with the Oregon Symphony. She has performed with the Orquestra Sinfonica de les Balears(Palma de Mallorca) and was invited by James DePriest to sing Ivan the Terrible with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony. She has sung with many American orchestras and choral organizations such as the Pacific Symphony, Colorado and Charlotte Symphonies, the Louisville Bach Society, the Baltimore Handel Choir, Portland Symphonic Choir and the Oregon Bach Festival. She performed Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires with the San Diego Symphony, Victoria Symphony, The Third Angle and the Cascade Music Festival.  Other more recent performances include Elijah with the Portland Chamber Orchestra and The Beggars Opera(Gay)with the Portland Baroque Orchestra.   

 

Since returning to Portland, Christine Meadows has been a member of the voice faculty at Portland State University.  She teaches Applied Voice, Opera Workshop, Vocal Pedagogy and is the Artistic Director for the Portland State University opera productions.  Her students are frequent winners of the scholarship and competitions and many have begun their own professional singing careers.
