The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators awarded Lisa Hatfield the Region V Knowledge Community Award for Collaboration and Visibility at its regional conference in San Diego.  Hatfield’s work as the chair of the Region V Asian Pacific Islanders Knowledge Community brought to light important issues and barriers facing Asian Pacific Islander (API) students as they matriculate, are retained, and graduate from the academy.

Hatfield began a work group at Portland State University to identify and solve the specific needs of the API communities on campus.  By collaborating with colleagues from across the university, Hatfield’s work quickly had an impact on the nearly 2,000 Asian Pacific Islander students who attend Portland State.  

Hatfield hosted a “drive-in” daylong conference at Portland State for colleagues from across the Pacific Northwest.  The conference titled “Working with Pacific Islander Students” hosted participants from five states and began and continued dialogue for the underserved API community.  

Hatfield spends her days as Portland State University’s Director of the Learning Center.  She began her employment at Portland State in 2004 as the Coordinator for Peer Tutoring when that program resided in the Educational Equity Programs & Services office.  In 2009, Hatfield led the Peer Tutoring and Learning Center to become its own self-sustaining unit.  More recently, she has been the driving force behind significant changes that have occurred for the Center, culminating with the addition of two full-time professional positions in 2010 when the Center was renamed the Learning Center and Hatfield was named Director.
