Visiting Scholar Speaks at PSU on New Plan for U.S. Climate Change Policy

What: Portland State University will host Michael Hanemann, University of California Berkeley, to speak on “A Different Architecture for Climate Change Policy.” Hanemann’s lecture will focus on the growing recognition of the need to take prompt action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and of the potential role for market-based incentives. In addition, he will talk about regulation and promotion of new technology, which he believes will need to play a larger role than emission trading alone to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

When: Friday, June 8, 2 p.m. Reception to follow.

Where: Smith Memorial Student Center, room 338 (1825 SW Broadway).

Background: Michael Hanemann is the director of the California Climate Change Center and Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics at UC Berkeley. He has conducted extensive research in recent years on the economic value of reliability in water supply, and the economic impact of potential climate change scenarios on U.S. agriculture and agricultural and urban water use in California. Hanemann also serves on the advisory boards of climate change research centers in California, Austria and Spain.
