The purpose of this announcement is to provide as much notice as possible that the University will be closed from Saturday, December 19 through and including Monday, December 28, 2009.  This closure period includes 5 working days and the Christmas holiday, and represents of time of low productivity in academic and staff operations and a general lack of work across campus.  More information will be available shortly about how these closure days will be applied in conjunction with the classified furlough days and the represented leave days when the tentative contracts are ratified.  The unclassified/unrepresented and unclassified/excluded staff will follow the procedures as identified for their AAUP represented colleagues.  It is the intent of the University to provide faculty and staff with maximum opportunities to apply relevant paid leave to the closure days in keeping with the spirit and letter of the negotiated tentative agreements for a leveled approach to the upcoming salary reductions, furlough days, and leave days.

The particular days of the closure were chosen following consultation with Academic Affairs, Extended Studies, Student Affairs, Smith Memorial Student Union, Facilities and Planning, Business Affairs, and Human Resources.

During campus closure periods, accommodations will be made for critical functions and academic research personnel to access the University as designated by the Deans and Directors of the colleges and units; in those approved cases alternative days off may be substituted with supervisory agreement.

Again, we want to notify you now about the closure period so that you may begin planning and making arrangements on both a personal and professional basis for the upcoming holiday season. We hope this advance notice is helpful to you.
