What: Over 140 high-school students in Oregon and Southwest Washington participating in this summer's Saturday Academy's Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Program will present their eight weeks of summer research through poster and oral presentations at the ASE Symposium (www.aseprogram.org).
Students conducted hands-on research for mentoring organizations that included Portland State University, Oregon Health & Science University, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Bonneville Power Administration and other professional, scientific and engineering organizations. Mentors provided students with a $1,000 stipend; local foundations and the Engineering & Technology Industry Council (ETIC) also provided funds. ASE is part of Saturday Academy, a pre-college program of PSU.

8:30 - 9 a.m.: Opening remarks by Darrell Gerrard, PacifiCorp's vice president of Transmission and Distribution Engineering and Asset Management; Robert Dryden, Dean, PSU’s Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science; and Joyce Cresswell, Executive Director, Saturday Academy.
9 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.: Poster sessions and oral presentations.
Where: PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom (1825 SW Broadway, third floor).
Cost: The event is free and open to the public.

Background: More than 2,400 students have participated in the ASE Program since 1990. Over 450 students applied for the 146 openings this summer; accepted students had an average high school GPA of 3.80 (out of a possible 4.0).
