PSU's Graduate School of Education and Continuing Education have
named Jim Carlile as director of the Center for Student Success.
The Center for Student Success (www.ceed.pdx.edu/success) was created
in fall 2003 as a collaborative project with PSU's Graduate School of Education
and Continuing Education. The center will provide consultation and program-evaluation
services with schools and districts. More specifically, the center has been
developed to:
* Help schools build capacity through professional development, coaching and consultation;
* Continuously review and apply research to practices that will promote student
achievement and support school improvement efforts;
* Evaluate programs that will support student achievement and school improvement;
* Collaborate in obtaining grants focused on raising student achievement and supporting school improvement.
As director, Jim Carlile will work with school districts and educational
service districts (ESDs) to help strengthen Oregon's K-12 education programs
through consultation, coaching and collaborative research. Closing the achievement
gap is a high priority for the center.
"Portland State University needs to be regarded as a resource for school
districts," said Carlile. "I want them to think of PSU as the first place
to turn for support. We have significant resources here that the Center for
Student Success can help them access."
Carlile has served in many educational roles in the Portland-metro area:
principal at Tigard and Sunset High Schools, director of School Improvement
in Beaverton, superintendent of Gresham-Barlow, interim superintendent in
Sherwood School District, interim principal at Jefferson High School in Portland
Public Schools, administrator-in-residence with PSU's Department of Educational
Policy, Foundations and Administrative Studies and an education consultant.
"Jim Carlile brings years of experience in a wide variety of roles in
K-12 public education to this position," said Cheryl Livneh, director of
Continuing Education and associate vice provost for Extended Studies. "We
are very pleased he's at the helm."
