Background:
“Moving to the Beat” focuses on young hip-hop artists living in Portland, Ore. and Freetown, Sierra Leone. Through this democratic musical form, young people are able to speak out against social injustice, to share information on important issues such as HIV/AIDS, and to recover a sense of creativity, solidarity, and hope for the future. As a result, a growing number of youth are rejecting guns in favor of lyrical “ammunition.” The event is sponsored by the Associate Students of PSU Speakers Board and the departments of Black Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Women’s Studies.
