PSU Professors Receive Fulbright Scholar Grants for 2008-09
The U.S. Fulbright Scholars Program awarded 2008-09 grants to six Portland State professors, who will lecture or conduct research in Croatia, Canada, Vietnam, New Zealand, Finland and Taiwan. Portland State is also hosting a visiting Fulbright scholar from Oman.
Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The Portland State professors are six of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 130 countries for the 2008-2009 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program.
Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Portland State's Fulbright scholars will be lecturing on topics that range from American literature, culture and film to economic development and research methods, and conducting research on subjects as diverse as health inequity and nanotechnology.

Michael Clark is lecturing on "American Literature, Culture and Film" at the University of Osijek in Osijek, Croatia.
Stephanie Farquhar, Associate Professor, Community Health
Stephanie Farquhar is conducting research on "The Influence of Community and Public Agencies on Canada's Policies to Reduce Health Inequity" at the University of Victoria in Victoria, Canada.
John Gallup, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Economics
John Gallup is lecturing on "Economic Development and Research Methods" at the Vietnam University of Commerce in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Christina Hulbe, Associate Professor, Geology
Christina Hulbe is lecturing and conducting research on "Numerical Modeling of Variability in Ice Sheet Flow" at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Pui Tak Leung, Professor, Physics
Pui Tak Leung is conducting research on "Computational Studies of the Quantum Effects in Plasmonics with Metallic Nanoparticles" at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan.
James Morris, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
James Morris will be lecturing and conducting research on "Nanotechnology Applications in Electrically Conductive Adhesives for Electronics Packaging" at Helsinki University of Technology in Helsinki, Finland.
Visiting Fulbright Scholar
Mohamed Al Muqadam, Associate Professor, History
Mohamed Al Muqadam's researched has focused on Richard Waters, the first American consul to Zanzibar, East Africa, 1838-1845. He joins us from Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman.
The Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Among thousands of prominent Fulbright Scholar alumni are Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist; Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation.
Fulbright recipients are among over 40,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. The Fulbright Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
