PSU Annual Earth Day and National Youth Service Day Events, April 21

What: In recognition of Earth Day and National Youth Service Day, Portland State’s Student Leaders for Service, faculty, staff and other volunteers will travel to different community sites to perform service projects: PSU Community Garden, Woodmere Elementary, King Elementary, Vernon K-12 and the Children’s Community Clinic.

Participants will engage in various activities including grounds cleanup, creation of an outdoor student artwork display, fountain restoration and courtyard beautification, building and landscape work and assisting Books for Kids with a book drive. Participants will first gather at PSU and hear opening remarks by Travis Williams, executive director of Willamette Riverkeeper. The day’s events are sponsored by PSU’s Center for Academic Excellence.

When: Saturday, April 21, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Where: Volunteers will meet at the Native American Student and Community Center (710 SW Jackson St.).

Background: Transportation will be provided with advance registration along with a light breakfast. Volunteers will travel to the community sites and should wear appropriate clothing for the service activities. Basic materials will be available at various sites to ensure completion of assigned tasks for the days events; however participants are free to bring any tools or supplies that would be appropriate.
