Profitable Sufficiency: International Conference on Business & Sustainability, November 4–5, 2010

Portland conference include leaders in sustainability from Aveda, Intel, IDEO, and more

(Portland, Ore.) September 29, 2010— The fourth-annual International Conference on Business & Sustainability presents “Profitable Sufficiency”: two days of discussions, interactive case study sessions and networking for those seeking sustainability-focused inspiration and opportunities for their organizations.

The conference takes place November 4–5, 2010, in Portland, Ore., and is presented by the Center for Global Leadership in Sustainability at Portland State University’s School of Business Administration.

WHAT IS PROFITABLE SUFFICIENCY? Modern industries such as food, fashion and technology are being characterized as too fast, too disconnected and ultimately unsustainable. Advocates of this critical viewpoint are employing terms like "sufficiency", "slow" and "heirloom design" to describe alternate approaches to traditional business. But what does it mean to operate a business under a paradigm characterized in these terms? Does an emerging business model of "blended value" offer sufficient and sustainable profits?

At the 2010 International Conference on Business & Sustainability leading practitioners, thought-leaders and academics will share their views on how businesses large and small can adopt models that reconnect people to place, product to purpose, and provide value creation to employees, communities and the ecosystems they inhabit.

This year’s speakers include:
•    Dominique Nils Conseil, President, Aveda
•    Beto Lopez, Senior Designer, Sustainability Initiative, IDEO
•    Paul Shrivastava, Director, David O’Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise
•    Robert Costanza, Director, PSU Institute for Sustainable Solutions
•    Bryan Birrell, Vice President for Operations, Frito-Lay Inc.
•    SaraJoy Pond, Founder, The Tipping Bucket
•    Heidi McCloskey, Director of Marketing, Organic Exchange
•    Lorie Wigle, General Manager, Eco-Technology Platform Office, Intel Corporation

Conference sessions for professionals and academics begin Thursday, November 4th at The Nines Hotel (525 S.W. Morrison St., Portland, Ore.) with registration and breakfast, followed by a full day of keynote speakers and workshops.

On Friday, November 5th, the conference resumes at Portland State University’s Native American Student and Community Center (710 S.W. Jackson St.) with a dynamic keynote breakfast and continues with academic paper presentations, functional area-oriented sustainability teaching workshops and speakers.

Early registration is $210 ($260 after October 15) and includes breakfast, lunch, and a hosted reception at The Nines Hotel on Thursday evening. Student and academic discounts are available.
