President Daniel O. Bernstine

Student Convocation Speech

September 22, 2006

Welcome to Portland State University – Oregon’s only international urban research university.

Today, I want to talk about our University and issue four challenges for you to consider during your time at PSU.

First, the University you attend provides lots of opportunities for you to become an international citizen.

I challenge each of you to take advantage of the international opportunities PSU has to offer–including establishing friendships with students from all over the world, participating in international student events, taking courses that include a short term international experience, or making plans for a study abroad program.

Second, Portland State University is located in the heart of the city and our motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City” is about connecting PSU to the city in a very broad way.

I challenge you to be engaged in the life of the City and connect your studies to real issues facing our community. Every area of study provides you with a connection to real problems and opportunities to improve the lives of others.

Third, Portland State University has a growing regional and national reputation for research. There are many opportunities for students to work with faculty on research projects, leading to presentations at conferences and publications.

I challenge you to begin your academic career with a goal of developing a track record of academic excellence and scholarship. Seek out faculty who are engaged in research and offer to work with them.

Fourth, Portland State University is about being green. Some of you may recall that great philosopher Kermit the Frog who said “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green.” Being Green is what PSU is about. It is one of our school colors so I hope you will wear it often and with pride.

Green defines the way we do business–we are a sustainable campus – the first in the nation to be certified salmon safe and the principles of sustainability are incorporated into the classroom curriculum. We support use of alternative transportation and urge you to use public transit, ride a bike, or walk to PSU.

I challenge you to prepare yourself to leave Portland State University with improved skills aimed at a sustainable lifestyle and supporting sustainable communities and workplaces.

As a reflection on our work toward sustainability and our school colors, I want to identify all of you here today as being part of the “GREEN” class.

What does that mean? First, during your time at PSU you will see me on campus and at events in the community, you may even see me in the grocery store. When you do, shout-out Green!

Then, I’ll know that you were here today and are working toward completing your academic goals. At graduation, I make it a point of shaking every student’s hand. When you walk across the stage to get your degree – whether it is two years from now, four, or six – I want you to say GREEN! Then, I’ll know that you have realized the goal you set for yourself and the one that all the faculty and staff at PSU have for you.

So, let’s try it now……everybody together say the word: GREEN!

Thank you. Remember, Kermit also said “I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!” Have a beautiful and green experience at PSU.
