Advance excerpts of President George Bush’s State of the Union speech, to be delivered this evening, indicate a call for renewed investment in the preparation of math and science teachers and expansion of basic science research as key to the nation’s continued competitiveness. Daniel O. Bernstine, president of Portland State University issued this response:

“President Bush is right on the mark in his call for more math and science teachers and in his commitment to expand basic science research. Portland State University is ready to be a full partner in this effort.

Today, Portland State University’s Graduate School of Education is increasing the number of math and science high school teachers, while preparing all teachers to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to use math and science in their everyday lives.

Sciences faculty members at Portland State are preparing tomorrow’s leaders and innovators in education, health care, and industry, while conducting research resulting in new discoveries that affect our communities and our lives.

The University’s commitment to incorporating sustainability in research, teaching, even in our operations management, is helping ensure that our students graduate with a perspective balanced by the economic, social, and environmental implications of the decisions they will face.

President Bush’s plan will require new investment—for new laboratory construction, faculty recruitment, and student support. With greater support from the federal government, Portland State can help meet the challenge of addressing issues of the environment and health care, and in keeping America competitive in our global economy.”
