Portland State University Library Receives Endowment from A. Gordon Hunter Estate
The late A. Gordon Hunter (1937-2006), an active Portland State University alumnus, former president of the Friends of the Branford P. Millar Library and a well-respected used bookseller in Portland, bequeathed his entire estate to the Oregon Community Foundation to create an endowment for the purchase of titles for the Portland State University Library's Special Collections.
Hunter grew up in Portland and received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Portland State University in 1959. He held a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Utah and taught high school civics and history in Oregon and Alaska. As a civic activist, Gordon not only supported Portland State, but also was a member of the Cully Association of Neighborhoods, the Portland Boundary Commission and the Metro Policy Advisory Committee, and was the founder and president of the Metro Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit agency that provides affordable housing.
Hunter's estate included a vast and encyclopedic book collection that was culled by Portland State librarians last year, from which many important books were added to the Library's collection, including D.C. Jesse Burkhart's Railroads of the Columbia River Gorge and Eugene Snyder's We Claimed This Land. Gordon loved books on the history of the Pacific Northwest as well as contemporary literature and films. He was one of the first independent booksellers to use the Internet successfully to sustain his thriving book business.
