What: In recognition of National Earth Day, Portland State’s Student Leaders for Service, faculty, staff and other volunteers will hold the first annual “Earth Day of Service.” Participants will travel to four different community sites including Lewis Elementary, King Elementary, Zenger Farms and Portland Impact: Richmond Center to engage in various activities including garden work, mural painting, compost bin construction, planting, grounds cleanup, moving and refurbishing a greenhouse, organic gardening, playground decoration and interacting with residents. The day’s events are sponsored by PSU’s Center for Academic Excellence.
Transportation will be provided with advance registration along with a continental breakfast, refreshments and snacks. Participants will first gather at PSU and hear opening remarks by Pramod Parajuli, professor of Education and co-founder and executive director of the Portland International Initiative for Leadership in Ecology, Culture and Learning. Volunteers will then travel to the community sites and should wear appropriate clothing for the service activities. Basic materials will be available at various sites to ensure completion of assigned tasks for the days events; however participants are free to bring any tools or supplies that would be appropriate.
When: Saturday, April 22, 2006, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Volunteers will gather for opening remarks in the South Park Blocks next to Cramer Hall (SW Montgomery and SW Park). In case of rain, opening ceremonies will occur in Smith Memorial Student Union Multicultural Center, rm. 228 (1825 SW Broadway).
