Intel Corp. plans to extend the Vietnam Scholars Program the company offers in conjunction with Portland State University.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, which employs around 15,000 in Hillsboro, will put another $2.5 million into the program, which provides two-year scholarships to Vietnamese students. The program trains students who could return to work in Intel's largest global assembly and test site, in Ho Chi Minh City.

Last year 28 students participated in the program. Another 22 students who joined the program this year will be feted at an on-campus reception Tuesday morning.

Intel invested $2 million in the program last year.

Hundreds of Vietnamese students applied for the two-year scholarship, which covers full non-resident tuition and fees, room and board, books, and a small stipend. The students are enrolled in PSU's electrical or mechanical engineering programs. They also take English, culture and engineering classes in an eight-week bridge program to prepare them for the fall term at PSU.
