Nick Trubachik's success story isn't over yet.
Trubachik became first PSU male athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships since the school returned to the Division I level in 1997. In the NCAA decathlon, he qualified for the USA Championships.
And last week in Des Moines, Iowa, Trubachik finished eighth with 7,434 points to qualify for the Thorpe Cup, a combined events competition between the United States and Germany to be held Aug. 7-8 in Marburg, Germany.
"I'm going to take two weeks off and get right back to it," said Trubachik, who has exhausted his collegiate eligibility but plans to continue as post-collegiate decathlete next year.
The decathlon at the USA Championships was a daunting physical challenge, particularly during Saturday's second-day events. The temperature on the track reached 100 degrees, and the heat index was 116.
"As long as you got in the shade and got hit by a breeze, you were fine," said Trubachik, who recorded personal records in the 100 and the shot in Des Moines. "I'm happy my body stayed together. I'm pretty healthy right now."
