Portland State continues a nine-year trend of enrollment growth with 23,486 students enrolled for fall term— a 1.6 percent increase over fall 2003.
The official numbers, which calculate enrollments four weeks after classes begin, showed an increase of 386 students from 2003. While the percentage increase is smaller than in recent years, the numbers reflect an offset of the largest graduating class in Portland State’s history in June 2004, when approximately 4,300 students earned undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The fall 2004 fourth-week enrollment showed growth in several key areas over fall 2003:
* Minority students increased 6.8 percent overall, including a 1.2-percent increase among African Americans, a 11.2-percent increase among Hispanics, a 6.6-percent increase among Asian Americans; and a 7.6 percent increase in Native American students;
* The number of master’s students increased 5.2. percent; Ph.D. students increased 7.3 percent.
University officials forecast that Portland State's enrollment will continue to climb toward 24,500 by term’s end due to intensive and accelerated short-course offerings not yet counted; overall University enrollment is projected to reach 35,000 by 2012.
