Lewis and Clark Aficionado to Speak at PSU Weekend in November
Dayton Duncan, author, filmmaker and Lewis and Clark scholar, is coming to Portland State University in November as the keynote speaker for PSU's annual community educational event, "PSU Weekend". Duncan will speak at PSU Weekend's noon luncheon on Saturday, November 6, 2004, on "Lewis and Clark's Guide to Leadership."
The luncheon with Dayton Duncan is the highlight of PSU Weekend, which also features lectures on a variety of topics including politics, food, jazz and history, educational tours and a football game. Seating for the Duncan lunch, to be held in Portland State's Smith Memorial Student Union (1825 S.W. Broadway, third floor) is $30; lecture-only admission is $12 and $5 for students. A reception will be held on Friday, November 5 and will give guests the opportunity to meet Duncan in person. Tickets for the reception, which include entrance to Duncan's luncheon talk the next day, cost $100. Members of the public who would like to attend either event should call 503-725-4949 for reservations. Media should email or fax requests to Trish Turchiarolo-Vanoni at vanoni@pdx.edu or 503-725-5074.
Dayton Duncan wrote and co-produced Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, a four-hour documentary that attained the second highest ratings in the history of PBS. Duncan has retraced the steps of Lewis and Clark from St. Louis to the Columbia four times over the last 20 years. He is the author of eight books, including Out West: An American Journey along the Lewis and Clark Trail, Scenes of Visionary Enchantment: Reflections on Lewis and Clark, The Men of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and The Journey of the Corps of Discovery. In politics, Duncan served as chief of staff to New Hampshire Governor Hugh Gallen, as national deputy press secretary for Walter Mondale in the presidential campaign of 1984, and as press secretary to Michael Dukakis in the 1988 campaign.
PSU Weekend, this year under the theme of "Days of Discovery," runs November 5-7 and offers 24 free lectures on Seminar Day, Saturday, November 6. All lectures are held in the Smith Memorial Student Union (1825 S.W. Broadway) unless otherwise noted. Call 503-725-4949 for more information or to pre-register. PSU Weekend is Portland State's nontraditional homecoming organized and sponsored by the PSU Alumni Association. A celebration of lifelong learning, it is held annually as a gesture of thanks to our city, and to alumni and friends of the University.
