Legal Expert to Speak at PSU on Artistic Freedom and "Ulysses"

What: Stephen Gillers, legal expert and former clerk to Judge Gus Solomon, will speak at Portland State University on “Who’s Afraid of Gerty and Molly? How Ulysses Made the Law Safe for Artistic Freedom (but it was a close call).” The inaugural event for the Gus & Libby Solomon Lecture Series, Giller’s talk will examine the legal battle to publish James Joyce’s Ulysses. Appetizers and a no-host bar will follow the event.


When: Sunday, November 6, 2005, 5 p.m.

Where: Portland State University, Columbia Falls Ballroom at University Place (310 SW Lincoln St. on the corner of 4th avenue).

Cost: The event is free and open to the public.

Background: Stephen Gillers has been a professor of law at New York University School of Law, a clerk with Chief Judge Gus Solomon and is currently the chair of the American Bar Association’s Joint Committee on Lawyer Regulation.

The Gus & Libby Solomon Lecture Series is dedicated to exploring the American Jewish experience and the ideals of social justice promoted by the Solomon’s throughout their lifetime. The event is sponsored by the Harold Schintzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU.
