PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland's new Chief of Police has deep roots in the local community.

Reese attended Roosevelt High School and graduated from Portland State University. He was with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office from 1989 until 1994, when he joined the Portland Police Bureau.

Adams made the official job offer to Reese, 52,  Wednesday morning after the two had discussed the position Tuesday.

He was credited with helping implement a new policy of police ride-alongs with mental health professionals and also worked as head of the SERT division and transit police. In 2004, Reese was promoted to captain of the Drugs and Vice Division.

When introduced as the new chief, Reese acknowledged the hazards of taking a job that rarely lasts more than four years.

"I would be foolish not to be worried about that pattern ---but I am again humbled to be here and will do my very best to serve the community and the men and women of the Portland Police bureau," said Reese.

Reese was sworn in at the City Auditor's office just before 1 p.m. after Adams' news conference. Reese was set to have his first roll call at 4 p.m.

Reese is married to his wife Cindy and they have two daughters. Reese also has a daughter from a previous marriage. Reese is also a triathlete and has completed an Ironman triathlon. He and his family live in Portland.
