Henry “Chip” Lazenby, Jr. has been named interim general counsel for Portland State University, effective October 9, 2006.

As interim general counsel, Lazenby is the liaison between the University and the Oregon Department of Justice. Working with the Oregon Department of Justice, the general counsel assists in litigation and is responsible for legal representation of the University, its officers and employees.

“Chip has the knowledge and experience we’re looking for in a general counsel,” said PSU President Daniel O. Bernstine. “His familiarity with the region, and with state and local governments, as well as his experience in the role of general counsel, will serve the University well.”

Lazenby currently runs Lazenby & Associates, a consulting business that works with a wide range of clients, including public entities, small business, community development corporations, developers and contractors, and others. He worked with Bullivant Houser Bailey in 2005 and 2006; previously he served as general counsel to the Portland Development Commission, legal counsel to Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, and others. He has an AB from Harvard and holds a JD and MBA from the University of Oregon.

Lazenby is a member of the Multnomah County Bar Association, the Oregon State Bar Association, and is involved with a number of community and professional organizations, including the Portland City Club’s board of governors, co-chair of the Portland-Multnomah County Sustainable Development Commission, Oregon Holocaust Resource Center board of directors, the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association and the La Salle North High School board.

Portland State University serves as a center of opportunity for over 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Located in Portland, Oregon, one of the nation’s most livable cities, the University’s innovative approach to education combines academic rigor in the classroom with field-based experiences through internships and classroom projects with community partners. The University’s 47-acre downtown campus exhibits Portland State’s commitment to sustainability with green buildings, while many of the 120 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees incorporate sustainability into the curriculum. PSU’s motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” inspires the teaching and research of an accomplished faculty whose work and students span the globe.
