Get Involved with Everybody Reads/Oregon Reads 2009

(Portland, Ore.) January 12, 2009 – During January and February, Portland State University will be sponsoring and hosting readings and events as part of the Everybody Reads/Oregon Reads 2009 community reading project of the Multnomah County library. Everybody Reads/Oregon Reads 2009 celebrates its seventh anniversary with over 70 events, including a number of events and exhibits held at Portland State. This year’s book selection is Lauren Kessler’s Stubborn Twig: Three Generations in the Life of a Japanese American Family, a true story about the Yasui family, a Japanese American family in Hood River, Oregon, who immigrated to the United States to pursue the American Dream only to have that dream shattered by the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Events with Portland State Involvement:
Read Out Loud: A Public Readathon
Tuesday, January 13, and Wednesday, January 14, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Multnomah County Central
Library, Collins Gallery (801 SW 10th Avenue).
Portland State Master of Fine Arts student, Sandy Sampson, will be joined by friends to read Stubborn Twig out loud. Take a turn reading out loud or come and listen!

The Other Oregon Trail: A Conversation with Lauren Kessler
Thursday, January 15, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom, Third Floor.
Stubborn Twig author, Lauren Kessler, will present at the Everybody Reads/Oregon Reads 2009 kick-off at Portland State University.

To Cry Down Injustice?
Oregonians and Japanese American Removal During WWII
Thursday, January 29, 7 p.m., Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 238/Browsing Lounge.
Ellen Eisenberg, author of The First to Cry Down Injustice: Western Jews and Japanese Removal during WWII, will speak about the Jewish response to Japanese internment in three West Coast cities.

Alton Takiyama-Chung’s Documentary, Okage Sama De
Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7, 7 p.m., 5th Avenue Cinema (510 SW Hall Street).
Through the history-based stories of five Japanese men, Alton Takiyama-Chung explores the complexity of the Japanese American experience during WWII from the U.S. internment camps to the front lines in Europe and the Pacific. Takiyama Chung will introduce the film and answer questions.

The Thirteen Club: How Narrative Nonfiction Brings the Past Alive
Friday, February 13, 11 a.m., Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 333.
Award winning author, Paul Collins, discusses how various authors use narrative nonfiction to animate works like Stubborn Twig. Collins is an english professor at Portland State and the author of five books. He regularly appears on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday as the program’s “literary detective.”

The History of Racism in Oregon
Thursday, February 19, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 294.
Join in on the National Day of Remembrance of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the internment of Japanese American citizens during WWII. Explore Oregon’s historical relationship to racial and cultural differences with Darrell Millner, professor of black studies at PSU, Randy Blazak, professor of sociology at PSU and Patti Sakurai, professor of ethnic studies at Oregon State University.
