Portland State’s School of Fine and Performing Arts presents a gala concert in celebration of its status as an “All-Steinway School.” The concert will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2007, at 4 p.m. in the Lincoln Performance Hall (1620 SW Park).

Featured performers at the concert are PSU faculty members Susan Chan, Lisa Marsh, Connie Titterington and Darrell Grant. The varied program ranges from classical piano repertoire and contemporary Chinese selections to jazz. Susan Chan’s selections of western repertoire will include a simultaneous multi-media presentation of 19th century paintings. Piano artists Lisa Marsh and Connie Titterington will perform as a duo on two Steinway grand pianos and Jazz Studies Director Darrell Grant will swing with PSU’s outstanding jazz students.

Tickets for the concert are priced at $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for students and children 12 and under. PSU students and faculty are admitted free with a University ID. All tickets will be available at the door. For more information contact Trish Trout at 503-725-3396.

steinway.jpg Portland State University joins a select group of only 73 All-Steinway Schools worldwide. All-Steinway status means every piano used at the University, from the school’s recital and performance halls to faculty studios and practice rooms is a Steinway, one of the best piano brands in the world. Portland State is the only All-Steinway School in the state of Oregon and the first All-Steinway University in the Pacific Northwest.

“I'm delighted that we were able to achieve the School of Fine and Performing Art’s Building Our Future campaign goal by becoming an All-Steinway school,” said Barbara Sestak, dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts. “This has been a long-standing dream in the Department of Music and is the beginning of a great partnership with Steinway & Sons. The concert is a great way to celebrate this accomplishment.”

Portland State and the Department of Music’s All-Steinway status ensure students in the Music department receive the best environment for learning and success upon graduation. Last year 98 percent of all pianists performing with orchestras in the U.S. chose the Steinway piano exclusively.

“By becoming an All-Steinway School, the University and the Department of Music are showing a commitment to excellence by providing the best possible instruments to our students and faculty,” said Bryan Johanson, chair of the Music department at PSU.

Other schools with All-Steinway status include Oberlin, Yale and Juilliard. For more information on Steinway & Sons please visit www.steinway.com.
