What: The 2006 spring Civic Engagement Breakfast, “World Collapse or The Great Turning: Individual and Collective Acts for Global Sustainability,” features keynote speaker David Korten and discussion facilitator Lawrence Wallack, dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs. The interactive breakfast will consider the role of higher education in society and Korten’s analysis and prospects for the future of our species as discussed in his newest book "The Great Turning" (Berrett-Koehler, 2006). In the book, Korten claims that a mounting perfect economic storm is fast approaching and discusses the impact of climate change, peak oil and financial instability on modern life.
When: Wednesday, May 24, 2006, 8:30–10 a.m.
Where: Smith Memorial Student Union, rm. 327 (1825 SW Broadway).
Cost: Free and open to the public. Seating is limited to the first 200 people. A light breakfast will be provided; attendees must RSVP.

Background: David Korten is author of the best-selling book "When Corporations Rule the World" (Berrett-Koehler, 2001), a former Harvard Business School professor, Air Force Captain, USAID adviser and an associate of the International Forum on Globalization with more than 30 years experience living and working in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
The series is sponsored by PSU's Center for Academic Excellence. Co-sponsors for this event are the Corporation for National and Community Service: Learn and Serve America and the College of Urban and Public Affairs. The intent of the breakfast series is to bring together faculty, students, staff and community partners interested in the role of community-based education to promote civic engagement. The breakfasts are part of Portland State's Civic Engagement Series, which facilitates meaningful discussions related to the University's mission of connecting with the larger community.
