Congessman Wu to Announce Space Camp Scholarships, April 17

What:
On Monday, Oregon Congressman David Wu will announce his annual space camp scholarship contest during a visit to Portland State University's Microgravity and Surface Tension Laboratory in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. Congressman Wu and students of Five Oaks Middle School will perform an experiment led by Mark Weislogel, associate professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. The experiment will demonstrate surface tension using bursting water balloons. Professor Weislogel will also show a video of the same experiment performed in space.

Background:
This marks the fifth year Congressman Wu has sponsored scholarships that allow four Oregon students to attend either the U.S. Space Camp/Academy in Huntsville, Alabama or Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's Space Flight Academy this summer.
 
A portion of Professor Weislogel's work is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Most recently he received a $680,000 grant from NASA for a study of capillary flow in low or zero gravity environments. NASA has launched three of Professor Weislogel's experiments to the International Space Station.
