Carl Wamser, Chemistry faculty, presented an invited talk at the Fifth International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines held in Moscow, Russia, in July. The presentation described work carried out by his PSU research group in the area of artificial photosynthesis, specifically the synthesis and characterization of novel conductive polymers for use in solar cells.

Debra Gwartney, English faculty, was a research fellow at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass., this summer. Leslie Hammer, Psychology faculty, was awarded a five-year, $4.1 million grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The grant will fund the Center for Work-Family Stress, Safety, and Health. It is part of a $28 million initiative funded by the National Institute of Health and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to support research on workplace policies that reduce work-family conflict and improve the health of workers and their families.

Gil Latz, International Affairs vice provost, will represent PSU on a United States advisory working group charged with formulating a set of recommendations on how to strengthen higher education cooperation between the United States and Vietnam. In June, the United States and Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an education task force. The advisory will submit its recommendations to each government by January 2009.

The grant will be used to create e-learning modules for Japanese interpretation and Arabic translation.

On June 26 and 27, 2007, a one and one-half day conference for University leaders offered presentations on Conflict Resolution, Organizational Change, Improving Performance in a Collegial Environment, Intercultural Competence, and Employment Law.
