Young Singers Workshop

July 18-22, 2011

Update: Cancelled due to low enrollment

Portland State University

Portland State University has long been a nationally recognized vocal program with choral and opera programs that make it a leader in our region.  The Young Singers Workshop is designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing music and vocal performance in their future.

The intensive one week workshop will include classes in acting for singers, diction, choir and vocal technique. This year we will be focusing on Italian diction and repertoire.  Each student will receive a private voice lesson and have the opportunity to sing in Master Classes given by members of the Portland State University Voice Faculty. There will be discussions in areas such as how to work with an accompanist, performance anxiety, audition techniques and how to prepare for college.  The week will conclude with a performance showcasing the accomplishments of the students.

Kodály Workshop

The PSU Department of Music and Summer Session are pleased to offer the Kodály Levels I, II, III, and IV certification workshop for teachers, music supervisors and curriculum coordinators, university faculty and students, and church musicians.

This program expands on the philosophy, materials, and methods of Zoltan Kodály through the study of musicianship, methodology, folk music, and music materials for K-8 curricula.  Coursework is approved by the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE). Participants undergo intensive instruction in personal music pedagogic artistry while developing interactive and developmentally appropriate materials and strategies -- based on an understanding of philosophy, principles, and pedagogic sequence of the Kodály method--using oral and written tradition repertoires for classroom and chorus. Certificates of completion are issued upon successful completion of each level.

Professor Debbie Glaze is the Administrative Director and Dr. Susan Brumfield is the Academic Director of The Kodály Certification Workshop at PSU.  The Kodály workshop will official begin on Sunday evening, July 25, 2010 and culminate in a
final concert on Friday afternoon, August 6th, 2010.  For current information on faculty, housing, and registration information
