Th
r o u g h o u t the 2010 - 11 academic year the Department of Music at
Portland State University will celebrate the great original music that
comes from this country. The year-long program, titled American
Originals, will present our students and community with a broad
sampling of music from the rich American musical canon. This will
include the study of classical compositions, improvisation, recordings,
films, videos, cartoons, and new
interactive music technologies.
Though
this program will extend deeply into our curricular programs, it will
also include many concerts, recitals, master classes and lectures that
will be open to the public. Some of the highlights currently planned
include:
Journey into Jazz- This entertaining and
highly original work for jazz quintet, narrator, and orchestra by
Gunther Schuller will feature students from our award winning jazz and
orchestral programs.
The Viola in My Life- This
ground-breaking composition by Morton Feldman will feature our
outstanding new music ensemble along with assisting guest music
faculty.
Morten Lauridson Residency- This great
American choral composer has created a vast quantity of beautiful and
unique choral music. Lauridson will be in residence for rehearsals,
ensemble and vocal coaching, lectures, and performances of his music.
Geri Allen Residence- Musician
has described celebrated pianist & composer Geri Allen as "one of
the most original stylists to emerge on the instrument in the past 25
years." The youngest person-and the first woman-to receive the Danish
Jazzpar Prize, Allen has performed and recorded with artists as diverse
as Charles Lloyd, Sir Simon Rattle & the Birmingham Symphony, and
Wayne Shorter. An Associate Professor of Music at University of
Michigan, and a 2008-2009 Guggenheim Fellow for Musical Composition,
Allen continues to expand musical boundaries as one of the most
eclectic and powerful jazz artists.
Opera Workshop-
Throughout the academic year students in the Opera Workshop will
present numerous selected scenes from operas and musical theater works
by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, George Gershwin,
and Stephen Sondheim.
American Originals, our year-long
focus, will also include a film series, additional residencies by
composers and performers, a lecture series, and numerous performances
by our students.
