Opera Productions
Portland State University Department of Music Annual Opera Production: Street Scene
Opera at PSU
Portland State University has a 50 year tradition of opera
productions. It is the only university in Oregon that produces a full
opera with orchestra each year. Since 1999, PSU Opera has won awards
from the National Opera Association for its productions of Cosi fan
Tutte (2007), Don Giovanni (2002) and The Marriage of Figaro (1999).
This unique opera program provides undergraduates and graduates with the
opportunity to experience every aspect of preparation and performance
of an opera role. In opera workshop and opera productions students
learn how to work with a stage director and conductor, how to work with
costumes, props and to sing with an orchestra. Each year, an opera is
chosen that best represents the talents and skills of the students in
the Department of Music. The operas are double cast whenever possible to
provide more students with an experience that is invaluable to young
performers as they prepare to audition for graduate schools, young
artist programs and to begin their careers.
The Jeannine B. Cowles Distinguished Visiting Professor of Opera
Endowment brings internationally recognized opera artists to Portland
State University to do master classes and help students prepare the
annual opera production. Artists such as Marilyn Horne (2001), Sherrill
Milnes (2002), Martina Arroyo (2005), Maestro Stephen Crawford (2006)
and stage director Tito Capobianco (2003, 2007-10) come to PSU to share
their expert knowledge and understanding, linking our students to the
professional world of opera. There are few universities in the country
that provide this amazing learning opportunity to their students.
Stage director and choreographer Bill Fabris will come
to PSU this spring as the Jeannine B. Cowles Distinguished Visiting Professor of Opera. Maestro Fabris boasts a growing national reputation for excellent and
innovative productions. Equally at home in the worlds of opera and musical theatre, his production of Massenet's Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame recently won critical acclaim at Opera Boston where he returned last season to direct Candide. A regular at the Chautauqua Institution, Mr. Fabris recently directed H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado and The Barber of
