Tracking traffic online

NEXT TIME YOU'RE STUCK in traffic know that cameras and pavement detectors are sending that fact to multiple agencies, as well as Portland State, that will use the data to try to alleviate congestion.

A high-speed, fiber-optic network went online recently that links the city of Portland, TriMet, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), and PSU's School of Urban Studies and Planning. The link allows all of them to talk to each other and share data in real time, says Rob Bertini, director of PSU's Center for Transportation Studies.

The network, built by ODOT and the city, allows fast transfer of data collected from the city's 100 traffic cameras and 500 freeway loop detectors and ramp meters. The data can be used for immediate traffic reports and control measures and in helping to make long-term transportation planning decisions.

"Our collaboration is the envy, and hopefully the model, for the rest of the country," says Bertini.
