Incubating new businesses

A MONITORING DEVICE that identifies insects by their wing beat signatures is in beta testing at a company housed in Portland State's Business Accelerator.

Located on southwest Corbett Street, the accelerator supports start-up technology companies by providing affordable office space, support services like grant writing and library use, and most importantly, a link to research and development capabilities of University faculty and students. It is this kind of support that helps start-up companies succeed, according to a recent study of the National Business Incubation Association.

In early 2004, the Portland State Business Accelerator accepted it first tenants, three start-ups with high-technology and biomedical products. Today it has 17 companies in residence, including IPM Development Company, which is creating ecologically sound insect management technology, processes, and chemicals.
